I’m curious if and how you’ve been thinking about that at all? I feel there’s a strong tie to that work and the conflict in Ukraine as a war over land. So, it’s my understanding that’s no longer the case, but it was while I was there. I think Zelenskyy realized if he cut off access to international journalists, international interest would be lost very quickly. So you weren’t allowed to photograph much. The Russians were using satellite technology to locate the exact place the image was taken and hitting it 10 minutes later with rockets.

What was happening was that Ukrainian civilians, professional and semi professional journalists were posting images as they took them.
They didn’t have any money, so if I wanted to go to an outpost, for example, I had to pay for the gas.Ĭurrently it’s almost impossible to photograph the Ukrainian military, military checkpoints, any military installation, most buildings over three stories high, any kind of tower and now the subway stations. When I was with the Ukrainian army it was very challenging to travel around.
